Pictures at an Exhibition is a ten-movement work with 5 “interludes” called Promenades between some of the music. The most important thing is to sketch during the ten movements….one sketch per movement for a total of 10 sketches. The Promenades serve as a break for the artist, and incidental music for the concert to listen to as they imagine walking through the art gallery.
Promenade
No. 1 “The Gnomes”
Promenade
No. 2 “The Old Castle”
Promenade
No. 3 “Tuileries” (Children Quarreling at Play)
No. 4 “Cattle” (Ox-Wagon)
Promenade
No. 5 “The Ballet of Unhatched Chicks”
No. 6 “Samuel Goldenberg and Schmuÿle”
Promenade
No. 7 “The Market Place at Limoges”
No. 8 “Catacombs”
No. 9 “The Hut on Fowl’s Legs”
No. 10 “The Great Gate at Kiev”
In summary: Each Promenade is incidental music…..music used to “walk” the listener through the museum to view the painting, or in this case the sketches you will be drawing. Each of the 10 movements is based on an actual painting and here is where you will sketch using both the painting and the music to develop your ideas. Use each of the paintings as inspiration, not as a guide. It is more important for your artistic ideas to be realized, just as they inspired Mussorgsky to compose the music.
The Band of Brothers is a little easier conceptually to understand and is based on the movie of the same name.
